In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, dwelt a boy named Shepherd. His life was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was to care for his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the breezes among the single tree on the hilltop were his main associates. Day after day, looking out for his wards imbued in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. On one such day from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy here conceived a mischievous plan.
Stories of wild beasts preying on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
